Tale of 2 Meetings

21 October 2010—A TALE OF TWO MEETINGS:
Congressman Lamborn (R-5th District CO) Endorses ACP Candidate Tancredo for Governor
Southern Colorado Tea Party Meeting, Pueblo, CO

I’m guessing Congressman Lamborn (R) might be wishing his meeting could have drawn the enthusiastic crowd Dan Maes (R) spoke before in Pueblo later in the evening—if Lamborn had chosen to be with Dan in Pueblo instead of with Tancredo (ACW) in Colorado Springs.

The Lamborn/Tancredo “crowd” was embarrassingly tiny, especially for 2 conservatives in the conservative bastion of El Paso County. Of the 26 people or so (later the crowd grew to just over 30 with the bicycle guy and maybe 2 or 3 curious lookie-lous who stopped by) who gathered by the steps of the Pioneer’s Museum, I think I could count on the fingers of one hand—and probably have a finger or two to spare—those who at the beginning weren’t part of the program or there from the media.

Message #1: Congressman Lamborn thinks Republicans should vote for Tancredo.

Message #2: Tancredo has no noticeable support in El Paso County.

I’m told that a recent appearance with Michelle Malkin in Colorado Springs drew almost the same number of people. I’ve been photographing many rallies/assemblies/debates, etc., starting in March, and this is the first time I’ve seen virtually no one show up for the featured candidate to at least hand out bumper stickers, yard signs, etc.

Last night a dozen of us Dan Maes supporters drove from Colorado Springs and farther north to attend the meeting of the SoCo Tea Party. We felt completely at home with that group. We saw good presentations by Walker Stapleton for Treasurer, Scott Gessler for Secretary of State, and Matt Arnold for Clear the Bench, the effort to dismiss 3 liberal justices from the Colorado Supreme Court. All 3 are great Americans and deserve your support and votes. A couple of other local issues were presented.

Tambor Williams was introduced as Dan Maes’s running mate. I was pleased to meet her and get a chance to make personal observations. Sharp, savvy, woman with a strong legislative background from around 10 years ago as well as having run a regulatory agency for Governor Owens. She helped keep overregulation reined in back before Governor Ritter turned liberal regulators loose who have pushed companies and jobs out of Colorado. Tambor is pro-life. Anyone who tells you different is either lying to you or ignorant of her position.

Dan Maes told the enthusiastic crowd the same basic message I’ve heard him deliver routinely since March when I started following his campaign. He has been out there campaigning just like the Tea Party members across the state want candidates to do. Dan was interrupted often by applause and received a standing ovation last night when he finished.

Colonel (USA, ret) Bob McConnell closed out the meeting with a rousing, charge-up-the-crowd message about how the Tea Party battle continues in earnest on 3 November. Unfortunately he wasn’t the establishment candidate anointed to replace Congressman Salazar, and you will recognize that was Colorado’s loss when you get acquainted with Bob. He told of being in a crowd of hundreds of thousands in Washington, D.C., with all those voices chanting, “We’ll remember in November Hey-Hey-Heey Goodbye!

Bottom Line:
The conclusion I reached on attending those two meetings yesterday is that El Paso County conservatives and Tea Party conservatives in the Pueblo area are showing virtually no enthusiasm for Tancredo in spite of what the polls say—and what Tancredo claims about how conservative he is.
